Historical Fiction based on a true story

Promises to Keep

Set in a quiet German town in 1938, Promises to Keep follows thirteen-year-old Hannah, a bright, compassionate girl whose ordinary school life is shattered when a new teacher arrives, openly loyal to Hitler and the rising Nazi regime. At first, Hannah believes politics will never touch her classroom—but fear spreads quickly, turning classmates into informants and neighbors into strangers. Hannah knows that her carefree lifestyle as a teenager is in jeopardy. On the way home from school one day, she’s attacked by the Hitler Youth. Frightened and angered Hannah resolves she must get out of Germany or face a concentration camp. Caught between her desperation to leave and her father’s refusal to let her go, Hannah promises her family to find freedom.

As propaganda replaces lessons and loyalty oaths replace learning, Hannah’s best friend Frederick becomes head of the Hitler Youth. She doesn’t trust him, but he always shows up when she or her family needs help. She questions whether he’s helping her or spying on her.

Through whispered prayers, secret acts of courage, and the strength of her faith, Hannah discovers that standing for truth may cost her everything including her life

Promises to Keep is a powerful, faith-friendly coming-of-age story about courage, moral choice, and the enduring power of hope in the face of rising evil.
